Victoria Derby Day

Saturday 31 October 2026 · Flemington

Black & White

Derby Day is the most formal of the four days. The iconic black-and-white dress code is taken seriously — monochrome outfits, dramatic millinery, and sharp suiting are the norm. Coloured accessories are acceptable, but the more black-and-white your outfit, the better.

Fashion Tips

  • Go bold with millinery — oversized black-and-white fascinators or full hats
  • Sharp tailoring in black or white works for men and women
  • White suits and black dresses are classics that never fail
  • Avoid busy patterns — clean lines photograph beautifully
For Him: Dark suit or tuxedo in black, charcoal, or white. Tie optional but recommended. Black or white pocket square.

Melbourne Cup Day

Tuesday 3 November 2026 · Flemington

Spring Garden Party

Cup Day is the most famous fashion day in Australia. The dress code is smart to semi-formal — think spring garden party. Bold colours, floral prints, and statement millinery all work. This is the day that attracts the most coverage, so most racegoers dress to be photographed.

Fashion Tips

  • Bright colours (coral, emerald, cobalt, yellow) stand out and photograph brilliantly
  • A hat or fascinator is expected — milliners book out months in advance
  • Midi and maxi lengths work well on Flemington's long straight
  • Comfortable shoes are critical — you'll be on grass and track all day
For Him: Suit (any colour), smart chinos and blazer accepted. A tie or pocket square shows effort. Loafers or oxfords over chunky sneakers.

Kennedy Oaks Day

Thursday 5 November 2026 · Flemington

Pink, Pastels & Florals

Oaks Day — "Ladies Day" — is the most feminine day on the calendar. Pink, blush, lavender, and floral prints dominate. The atmosphere is more relaxed than Cup Day and it's often considered the best fashion day of the carnival for creative millinery and pastel dressing.

Fashion Tips

  • Pink in all its shades is the dominant colour — blush, hot pink, dusty rose all work
  • Floral midi dresses are a perennial favourite
  • Feathered fascinators and sculptural pieces are very at home on Oaks Day
  • This is the day to take risks with colour and silhouette
For Him: Light-coloured suits (cream, pale blue, blush) complement the day's aesthetic beautifully. Pink tie or pocket square is a crowd-pleasing touch.

Champions Stakes Day

Saturday 7 November 2026 · Flemington

Relaxed & Colourful

Stakes Day is the most relaxed dress code of the four-day carnival. Smart casual to semi-formal is the range. Racegoers tend to wear the more casual or colourful pieces they've held back — think a wrap dress, bold print, or casual suit.

Fashion Tips

  • Smart casual is appropriate — no need for full formal
  • A pop of colour is always welcome at Flemington
  • Fascinators are optional but still seen frequently
  • Comfortable shoes are a must — you've earned them by now
For Him: Smart chinos, blazer, or open-collar shirt. Full suit is fine but not required. Loafers, clean sneakers acceptable.

Millinery Guide

A hat or fascinator isn't just encouraged at the Melbourne Cup Carnival — on some days it's expected. Here's how to get it right.

Book your milliner or hat hire 6–8 weeks before the carnival. Quality milliners and hatmakers sell out fast.

Melbourne spring weather is notoriously unpredictable. Bring a light wrap and ensure your hat is pinned securely.

Match the scale of your hat to your outfit and body. A dramatic hat needs a simple dress; a simple headpiece suits a statement outfit.

You don't have to match your hat perfectly to your outfit — a complementary colour or deliberate contrast often looks more intentional.

Flemington runs a Best Dressed competition on each day. Details are available from the VRC closer to the carnival.
