How to Read Racing Form
Decoding the form guide is the foundation of smart punting. From last-start notation to class and conditions — everything you need to know.
The Form String Explained
Australian form is written as a string of numbers and symbols representing each recent run, with the most recent run on the right.
4x1·3214
Last 8 runs — reading left (oldest) to right (most recent)
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 1–9 | Finishing position in that race (1st, 2nd … 9th) |
| 0 | Finished 10th or worse |
| x | Unplaced (further back than 10th in a large field) |
| d | Disqualified after finishing |
| f | Fell |
| u | Unseated jockey |
| p | Pulled up by jockey mid-race |
| . | Season break (e.g. "4.2" = 4th last prep, 2nd this prep) |
Reading the example: "4x1·3214" means: finished 4th, then unplaced, then won — then (after a break) finished 3rd, 2nd, 1st, then 4th most recently. A horse with a "1" on the right has won its last start.
The Eight Key Factors
Beyond the form string, these are the variables that separate good bets from great ones.
- Weight
- Barrier
- Jockey
- Trainer
- Track & Distance
- Class
- Track Condition
- Days Since Last Run
Reading the Racecard
A typical racecard entry contains everything you need — here's what each column means.
| Column | What it means | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| No. | Saddlecloth / race number | Corresponds to barrier draw and colours |
| Horse | Name + age + sex (g=gelding, m=mare, c=colt, f=filly) | Older horses (5+) often peak in staying races |
| Wt | Weight carried in kilograms | Lower = advantage in handicaps |
| Bar | Barrier (gate) number | Lower often better in sprint races |
| Form | Last 10 runs string | Trend is more important than any single run |
| Jockey | Rider name | Check their record at the track |
| Trainer | Trainer name | Their win rate at the carnival matters |
| Rating | Official handicap rating | Higher = more talented horse |
| Odds | Current market price | Compare across bookmakers for best value |
