How to Read Racing Form

Decoding the form guide is the foundation of smart punting. From last-start notation to class and conditions — everything you need to know.

The Form String Explained

Australian form is written as a string of numbers and symbols representing each recent run, with the most recent run on the right.

4x1·3214

Last 8 runs — reading left (oldest) to right (most recent)

Symbol Meaning
1–9Finishing position in that race (1st, 2nd … 9th)
0Finished 10th or worse
xUnplaced (further back than 10th in a large field)
dDisqualified after finishing
fFell
uUnseated jockey
pPulled up by jockey mid-race
.Season break (e.g. "4.2" = 4th last prep, 2nd this prep)
Reading the example: "4x1·3214" means: finished 4th, then unplaced, then won — then (after a break) finished 3rd, 2nd, 1st, then 4th most recently. A horse with a "1" on the right has won its last start.

The Eight Key Factors

Beyond the form string, these are the variables that separate good bets from great ones.
  • Weight
  • Barrier
  • Jockey
  • Trainer
  • Track & Distance
  • Class
  • Track Condition
  • Days Since Last Run
